I am most privileged for the honor to lead the Alliance of Beninese of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut (Alliance Benin). Our journey which started over 17 years ago in New York City has helped Beninese across the tri state stay in touch through our culture and mostly through our homeland and our dreams. This journey was indeed possible thanks to our pioneers. To date, four main periods mark our Alliance.
(1995-1998): The Birth of Alliance Benin. In 1995, our late fellow country man, Mr. Antoine Tessy, the first president of Alliance Benin, aided, by other fellow such as Mr. Joseph Azatassou and Mr. Felicien Agbossou have the idea to create an informal gathering mean that will reunite Beninese immigrants living and working in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. The group led by the late Antoine Tessy, met and celebrated all type of events including, birthdays, marriages, graduations and so on.
(1998-2007): The Formalization of Alliance Benin. The group elected a new president, Mr. Benoit SOGNONVI in 1998. Under the leadership of President Benoit Sognonvi, Alliance Benin was incorporated with the department of State of New York. The new team also opened a bank account and a mail box for the Alliance. Each year, the new team organized and celebrated two events: the New Year feast and our national independence celebration.
(2007- 2011) The Second generation team: The Alliance elected a new team in 2007 presided by Dr. Atinkpahoun Antoine. President Atinkpahoun’s team honored our tradition in organizing each year the two main events that our community celebrates.
